Antigen rapid tests are diagnostic tests used to detect specific proteins, called antigens, from a virus in a person's respiratory sample, usually from the nose or throat. They are designed to provide quick results within 15 to 30 minutes, and are often used for screening and early diagnosis of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, influenza, and strep throat.

Antigen rapid tests work by using a sample collection swab to collect respiratory secretions, which are then mixed with a solution containing antibodies that are specific to the virus being tested for. If the virus is present in the sample, the antibodies will bind to the viral antigens, producing a visible result on a test strip.

Compared to PCR tests, which detect the virus's genetic material and require specialized laboratory equipment, antigen rapid tests are relatively inexpensive, portable, and can be performed at point-of-care settings, such as clinics, schools, and airports. However, they may have a lower sensitivity and specificity than PCR tests, meaning that they may miss some cases or produce false-positive results.

Antigen rapid tests are an important tool in controlling the spread of infectious diseases, especially in settings where prompt detection and isolation of infected individuals are crucial. However, they should be used in conjunction with other measures such as social distancing, mask-wearing, and vaccination to effectively mitigate the spread of disease.
